Butte Creek Mill & General Store
One of Southern Oregon’s favorite historic relics has been in operation for well over a century, 138 years to be exact. The Butte Creek Mill is situated over Little Butte Creek and has been providing flours and culinary treats for Southern Oregon since 1872. The mill consists of three floors and a basement, all still in full operation. Tours are open to the public 7 days a week, with interpretive signage available as well. Visitors can gather to watch as the mill’s pulleys, belts and original imported millstones use 100% water power to grind grains into delicious whole-grain flours and mixes that can be purchased in the country store.
The country store offers various varieties of whole grains, stone-ground flours, meals and mixes, rolled grains, and cooking cereals. Standing out amongst these products are the ward-winning pancake and waffle mix, bran muffin mix, cornbread mix, and the mill’s special spices. The store itself contains quite an amazing array of antique memorabilia and also provides cold fruit drinks, ice cream, vitamins and supplements, and many various items specially made in Oregon. Grab a drink or snack, and take a seat on one of the many benches and listen to the exciting noises of pulleys and belts that work the mill’s machinery.
Why stone-ground? Butte Creek Mill workers say that the milling process retains the original healthful qualities of the grains. Their products even taste richer because of how they mill the grains! “Ordinary” flours from commercial mills have to be enriched because the germ has been removed and, although commercial milling methods may be faster, the processes are very hot and remove any remaining nutritious qualities from the grains. With a stone-grinding process such as the one at the Butte Creek Mill, all the nutrients are protected and the grains are thoroughly blended. You are guaranteed to taste the difference!
The mill is currently owned by Bub Russel and his wife Debbie, of Eagle Point. Both share an affinity for antiques, and that is why antique lovers will love stopping by to tour the mill. Authentic old signs, hundreds of containers of all shapes and sizes line the shelves, all from the Russell’s own antique collection based in Portland. Incredible hand-picked antiques are also for sale in the Butte Creek Mill’s neighboring antique store, a renovated cheese factory from the late 1800s.
Nearby is the Antelope Covered Bridge, built in 1922, the Eagle Point Museum, formerly the old Long Mountain School built in 1925,on Royal Avenue, and the infamous 1879 Wood House on HWY 62. All of these attractions are rich in local history and offers a great getaway for a picnic or just some downtime.
Butte Creek Mill is also the perfect place to hold celebrations of every kind, including concerts and events, wine tasting, weddings and/or receptions, birthday parties, and
business meetings and retreats. Bob Russell, the proprietor of Butte Creek Mill, invites you to stop by, take a tour, rest by the creek, and sign the guest book.
Hours of operation are Monday through Saturday, 9:00am to 5:00pm, and Sunday, 11:00am to 5:00pm. There is no admission charge.

I remember when I lived in Eagle Point I would walk home from school every day and buy a flavored candy cane stick with my friends. Those were the days!
